69 14 I haven't said much about Rita the mule who arrived in December with the donkeys from the Kill Pens.
Rita lives in a state of terror whenever she is approached by a human. Whether this is caused by an event in her past we will never know. The only human who is cleaning her pen and working with her on a daily basis is Jeanette. Jeanette says it is a one step forward two steps back scenerio. With time Rita will release to trust Jeanette and then Rita's life will truly begin.
4 0 Misty arrives at the Refuge in the fall of 2015 with her friend Dorothy
2 1 Ben and Rosie arrive Spring 2015
57 5 The mule has a new name. Let me introduce Rita and we are happy to say that her snotty nose is starting to clear up already. Rob is working on getting close to her so we can get that halter off . This part of the introduction to her new home is taken at a very slow and easy pace.
123 8 A few months ago Monty who is around 34 years old was showing signs of a swollen thyroid so he has been given a small handful of dried kelp each morning. His thyroid is now to back normal but each morning Monty comes into the barn to remind me that his daily kelp needs to be administered.

31 10 Rita Update'
Rita is improving with her daily training but we still cannot handle her. As a result we have called out Dr. Jay on Thursday to dart her with a sedative so she can be given a health check and have the old cut on her back leg looked at. Jim our farrier will then be able to start her hoof care. We have never had to dart a donkey/mule before but Rita is so broken we have no choice as she needs to receive some medical care and her shots.
A further report will follow tomorrow.
